Wulfenite and Pyromorphite

Mineral Species: Wulfenite and Pyromorphite, PbMoO4 and Pb5(PO4)3Cl (Lead Molybdate and Lead Chlorophosphate).

Mineral Notes: Wulfenite was first discovered in 1785 by Xavier Wulfen who drew pictures of many prismatic and pyramidal crystals, before the importance of the shape of crystals in structure determination and mineral recognition was widely known.

Description: A slate-like matrix containing several small vugs lined with white, transparent Wulfenite crystals. Most have excellent terminations. The upper surface is covered by a thin layer of pale green Pyromorphite, which under magnification turns out to consist of many botryoidal crystal aggregates.

Location: Bryn Y Rarian Mine, Ceredigion, Wales.
