Pyrite and Basalt

Pyrite, FeS2 (Iron Sulfide), is the most abundant and widely distributed Sulfide. It is frequently found with many other metal ores. It is common in coal, slate and other metamorphic rocks. Frequently confused with Gold it is popularly known as "fool`s gold". However it is much harder and very brittle. Ironically it is often rich in Gold, and hence, may one day become an important source of the metal. Pyrite was once an important source of Sulphur for the production of Sulphuric acid.

Description: A black basalt matrix richly covered by a deposit of Pyrite. The mineral forms distinct golden bands around the matrix, offering an extremely attractive contrast of gold on black. A most unusual mineral combination.

Location: Eastern Highlands, Zimbabwe.
