Galena and Calcite

Galena, PbS (Lead Sulfide), is one of the most abundant and widely distributed sulfides. It is the main ore of lead and frequently contains valuable amounts of silver.

Description: A heavy specimen consisting of two fused Galena crystals. Both are roughly cubic in shape, are twisted with respect to one another, and have a very shiny lustre. The interest in the specimen is three-fold. First, the crystal faces are stepped, giving rise to ledges and crevices. Second, many of these steps are lined with perfectly transparent Calcite rhombohedra. One face of the galena cubes is thus almost wholly covered by such a deposit. And finally, someof the Galena is covered by a thin, highly lustrous deposit of Pyrite. The whole combination gives rise to a very attractive specimen.

Location: Schullsburgh, Wisconsin, USA.
