Wavellite, Al3(PO4)2(OH,F)3.5(H2O) (Hydrated Aluminium Phosphate Hydroxide), is a mineral that demonstrates the classic botryoidal crystal habit. It produces a unique effect when the globules are imbedded in rock and then fractured. The result is a radial cluster which reflects light to produce a sparkling pinwheel effect.
Description
: Dozens of small perfectly formed Wavellite globules rest on the gray matrix of this specimen. They reach diameters of up to 2mm and some have grown together into the classic botryoidal masses. All have the typical pastel green colouration and very attractive pearly lustre. Where the interior of one or two spherules is exposed the classic radiating spoke-wheel effect of crystal alignment can easily be seen.
