Quartz, SiO2 (Silicon Dioxide), is a widely found rock-building material found in many shapes and forms. It is one of the most commonly used materials by people, having uses in glass manufacture, electronic equipment, jewelry, decoration and in ancient days for producing sparks to start fires.
Description: Although the colour of the quartz is not the most interesting of the specimens we have previously shown, the specimen is unusual because of the shape of the crystals. Most are squat hexagonal prisms with well formed pyramidal terminations. Closer inspection shows that some of the pyramids are slightly twisted as they proceed towards the apex.
Location: Messina, South Africa.
