Jasper is a variety of microcrystalline Quartz, SiO2 (Silicon Dioxide). It is a widely found rock-building material found in many shapes and forms. It is one of the most commonly used materials by people, having uses in glass manufacture, jewellery, decoration and in ancient days for producing sparks to start fires.
Description: An angular gray-green matrix of Jasper, in which are embedded elongated copper-coloured bands. Close inspection of these shows that many have a strong metallic lustre. Looking at the side of the specimen shows that most of the bands go right through the matrix and are therefore not just surface markings. A very unusual form of this mineral.
Location: Kipili, Tanzania.
