Microcline var. Amazonite

Amazonite, K(AlSi3O8) (Potassium Aluminium Silicate), is a variety of the feldspar mineral Microcline. Microcline differs from from the other potassium feldspars in that the distribution of silica and aluminium ions is regular rather than random.

Description: This specimen demonstrates two aspects of Amazonite, the way the mineral looks in its raw state and also how it looks when polished. The rough material is pale blue and has a very distinct grain within the body of the mineral. There is also a hint of labradorescence. The polished face is very smooth and has an alomst eggshell-like transluscency. The latter contributes to the fact that Amazonite is highly prized as a popular semi-precious gemstone.

Located: Konso, Sidamo Province, Ethiopia.
