Carnelian is a microcystalline variety of Quartz which has been stained red by Iron compounds. There were many ancient beliefs associated with this stone of which most were about protection against evil. The name is said to be derived from the Latin word "Carnis" which means flesh due to the colour. Some Romans believed that the darker Carnelian represented males and the lighter, females. Carnelian is admired by Moslems, because Muhammad himself wore a silver ring set with an engraved stone.
Description: A rounded nugget of Carnelian which has been polished by river tumbling. The stone is banded and the patterning is quite attractive, permeating right through the whole specimen. The very waxy luster and soap-like feel add to its unusual attractiveness.
