Sphalerite, ZnS (Zinc Sulfide), is a common sulfide and an important ore of Zinc. It is often called Zincblende or Black Jack. The mineral most commonly occurs in hydrothermal veins in all types of rock, especially with other sulfides, like Galena. Nearly all Sphalerite contains some Iron in solid solution, which affects its appearance and properties. Identification is made on the basis of its perfect cleavage and resinous luster.
Description: This is an interesting specimen of massive Sphalerite as it appears when extracted in its "ore" form. The body of the matrix is dark brown, most likely coloured by inclsuions of Hematite. There are also metallic looking areas of silvery-grey mineral. What makes this specimen truly remarkable and attractive is the single "herkimer-like" crystal of quartz. This is very transparent, has almost perfect prismatic form and a pink colouration, when viewed along its medial axis. A great display specimen.
