Mineral Species: Scolecite
Chemical Formula: CaAl2Si3O10.3H2O
Chemical Name: Hydrated Calcium Aluminum Silicate
Mineral Class: Zeolite Silicate
Mineral Notes: Scolecite is one of the rarer zeolites. It forms in volcanic vesicles along with other zeolites where silica is in short supply. The mineral forms beautiful fans of needle-like crystals. Scolecite, Natrolite and Mesolite are closely related and often found together. All three minerals are referred to as "chain" or "needle" zeolites.
Description: A honeycomb-like matrix whose "cell" walls are lined with white crystalline Scolecite. There are also numerous, well-fromed apophyllite cubes, especially on the lower surface.
