Mineral Species: Barite
Chemical Formula: BaSO4
Chemical Name: Barium Sulphate
Mineral Class: Sulphate
Mineral Notes: Barium is easily identified by its heavy weight. Most similar minerals are much lighter. It tends to form well defined flattened crystals. Occasionally it forms large rounded mounds from precipitation of hot, barium-rich springs.
Description: The specimen consists entirely of Barite. On the top surface are clusters of fused Barite crystals. Each cluster is made up of parallel blades, small at the edges and increasing in size towards the centre. This gives the appearance of spheres and produces a very unusual effect. The Barite is honey-yellow and lustrous, reflecting light strongly.
