Analcime

Mineral Species: Analcime

Chemical Formula: NaAlSi2O6.H2O

Chemical Name: Sodium Aluminium Hydrous Silicate

Mineral Class: Zeolite Silicate

Mineral Notes: Analcime, in common with other Zeolites, contains a very open crystal structure characterised by channels and pores through which other molecules, such as water, can freely pass. The mineral forms in igneous rocks either by crystallisation from a melt or by precipitation from water into vesicles (bubbles) in lava. It crystalises in the cubic system as trapezohedra and cubes.

Description: A very porous, pummice-like matrix covered by several clusters of fused Analcime crystals. Many of these are well-formed and have a clearly visible angular habit. The colour ranges from pearly-white to pale brown.

Location: Studenec, Czech Republic.
