Mineral Species: Quartz var. Agate
Chemical Formula: SiO2
Chemical Name: Silicon Dioxide
Mineral Class: Tectosilicate
Mineral Notes: It is rare for any mineral to show more patterns created by nature than Agate. In reality Agate is Chalecedony Quartz that forms in concentric layers about some common centre. Each individual Agate forms by filling a cavity in host rock. As a result, Agate is often found as round nodules, with concentric bands like the rings of a tree trunk.
Description: A very beautiful specimen consisting of a half geode, whose cut surface has been polished to expose pale and dark-blue bands. The centre contains a cavity in which the quartz can be seen to have the typical Chalcedony lustre and texture.
