Mineral Species: Galena
Chemical Formula: PbS
Chemical Name: Lead Sulphide
Mineral Class: Sulphide
Mineral Notes: Galena is one of the most abundant and widely distributed sulfides. It is the main ore of lead and frequently contains valuable amounts of silver.
Description: A thin matrix hosting two intergrown cubes of Galena. The crystals and the surface of the matrix are covered by a dusting of brassy Chalcopyrite. The effect is very pretty, offsetting the grey of Galena against the bright Chalcopyrite. A particulalry striking specimen when viewed under bright illumination.
Location: Magmont Mine, Bixby, Missouri. (This mine also produces the rare mineral Bixbyite, (Mn, Fe)2O3, which has been named after this location)
