Mineral Species: Strontianite
Chemical Formula: SrCO3
Chemical Name: Strontium Carbonate
Mineral Class: Carbonate
Mineral Notes: Strontainite is found in low-temperature hydrothermal veins in limstones and marbles, usually in association with Calcite, Barite and Celestine. Together with the latter, it is a source of Strontium metal used in the production of fireworks and other coloured pyrotechnic devices.
Description: A massive piece of white Strontianite with a covering of green calcite. Close inspection of the white matrix shows this to be composed of fused elongated crystals. Some overlap producing a distinct fish-scale effect. A very attractive pearly luster compliments the specimen.
Location: Rosiclare District, Hardin Co., Illinois, USA.
