Mineral Species: Cerussite
Chemical Formula: PbCO3
Chemical Name: Lead Carbonate
Mineral Class: Carbonate
Mineral Notes: Cerussite is often called white lead ore. Its properties are nearly identical to Witherite, but the mineral has the highest specific gravity of any carbonate.
Description: A composite group of crystals of black Cerussite. The faces show numerous almost complete growth zones which means that it is difficult to distinguish where one crystal begins and another one ends. In effect each of the tabular aggregates is composed of numerous blade-like crystals. The colour is unusal, cerussite normally being white. This is probably due to iron impurities. Otherwise, the mineral gives a very bright semi-metallic luster. The specimen is an "old-timer" and comes with the original Bottley label.
Location: Queensland, Australia.
