Mineral Species: Apophyllite on Calcite
Chemical Formula: KCaSi8O20(F,OH).8H2O & CaCO3
Chemical Name: Potassium Calcium Silicate & Calcium Carbonate
Mineral Class: Phyllosilicate
Mineral Notes: The name of the mineral means "to leaf apart" in Greek. It was given because crystals tend to peel or flake apart when heated due to the loss of water.
Description: Three twinned Apophyllite crystals upon a matrix of white Calcite. Two of the crystals are quite small but are very transparent and gemmy. The largest crystal is cubic but has sharply chamfered corners, producing a very unusual effect. Unfortunately this is difficult to photograph because of the sharp contrast. The body of the crystal contains numerous growth zones which can easily be seen.
Location: Raigad, India.
