Mineral Species: Fluorite
Chemical Formula: CaF2
Chemical Name: Calcium Fluoride
Mineral Class: Halide
Mineral Notes: Fluorite is found in a wide range of geologic environments, ranging from inclusions in granite to replacement deposits in limestones. It is one of the most commonly collected minerals because of the beauty of its specimens, especially the well-formed cubic crystals.
Description: The specimen clearly shows the interior outline of an octahedral crystal which has been overgrown by a secondary mineralisation. The latter has given rise to stepped crystal growth, which when viewed from above, shows an overstacking of small cubes. Many are twinned. The colour ranges from pale green on the surface to deep green in the interior. Otherwise the specimen has a dusting of tiny Pyrite crystals around the periphery. The bright metallic contrast is very pretty.
Location: Changsha, Hunan, China.
