| Mineral Species: Fluorite
Chemical Formula: CaF2
Chemical Name: Calcium Fluoride
Mineral Class: Halide
Mineral Notes: Fluorite is found in a wide range of geologic environments, ranging from inclusions in granite to replacement deposits in limestones. It is one of the most commonly collected minerals because of the beauty of its specimens, especially the well-formed cubic crystals.
Description: This specimen is characterised by the intensity of the colour. The depth of violet is so deep that the mineral appears black when illuminated form above. It is only when lit from below, as shown in the picture, that the beauty of the Fluorite becomes truly apparent. This is an unmissable specimen, further augmented by its excellent cubic crystal form.
Location: Minerva Mine, Cave in Rock, Illinois, USA.
