Mineral Species: Wavellite
Chemical Formula: Al3(PO4)2(OH,F)3.5(H2O)
Chemical Name: Hydrated Aluminium Phosphate Hydroxide
Mineral Class: Phosphate
Mineral Notes: Wavellite is a mineral that demonstrates the classic botryoidal crystal habit. It produces a unique effect when the globules are imbedded in rock and then fractured. The result is a radial cluster which reflects light to produce a sparkling pinwheel effect.
Description: A block of cut matrix on whose upper suface sits a very unusual Wavellite deposit. The largest crystals, up to 2cm, form a radiating fan from the lower edge. Scattered around the upper half, are numerous circular rosettes of smaller crystals. The colour is a very unusual silvery-green. A very attractive specimen under the right illumination.
Location: High Down Quarry, Filleigh, Devon, England.
