Quartz var. Faden

Mineral Species: Quartz var. Faden

Chemical Formula: SiO2

Chemical Name: Silicon Dioxide

Mineral Class: Tectosilicate

Mineral Notes: Faden Quartz is a descriptive term for a tabular form of Quartz with a white thread-like zone running through the interior. The term Faden is a German word for "thread". The variety is found in areas of low grade metamorphism in which cavities in the rock are growing. When these zones expand, the Quartz crystals are repeatedly broken and reformed. The regrowth incorporates fluid and gaseous inclusions, giving rise to the white threads. The edges of the crystals usually grow faster and incorporate the liquid inclusions in the center of the crystals.

Description: A flattened, elongated crystal, showing numerous side-growths and direction changes. Very clear and lustrous. An excellent example of this rare and unusual Quartz variety.

Location: North Waziristan, Pakistan.
