Galena and Calcite

Mineral Species: Galena

Chemical Formula: PbS

Chemical Name: Lead Sulfide

Mineral Class: Sulfide

Mineral Notes: Galena is one of the most abundant and widely distributed sulfides. It is the main ore of lead and frequently contains valuable amounts of Silver and occasionally Zinc.

Description: A very rich matrix of microcrystalline Pyrite, Marcasite and Chalcopyrite on which sit two Galena crystals. The larger of the two has the best cubic form and has a smaller cubic face partially emerging from the main face. All edges and terminations are very sharp and undmaged. Complimenting the Galena are a number of thin, elongated Calcite crystals. These are very gemmy and have a pale-yeloow colour. A very aesthetic combination.

Location: Brushy Creek Mine, Reynolds County, Missouri, USA.
