Mineral Species: Calcite
Chemical Formula: CaCO3
Chemical Name: Calcium Carbonate
Mineral Class: Carbonate
Mineral Notes: Calcite is one of the commonest minerals, being the main constituent of limestone. Calcite is often fluorescent, a small amount of Managnese is enough to make it glow red under UV light. The mineral will bubble in acid distinguishing it from many similar species, even other carbonates which do not dissolve so easily in cold acids. Coral Calcite is a variety characterised by crystals which have traditional dog-tooth form but the crystal edges and terminations are rounded, lloking like molten wax.
Description: A specimen having the very characteristic form of crystals which appear to have molten and 'run' like wax. A very interesting effect. In spite of the irregular shape, the crystals have a strong glassy luster and many are partially transparent, producing a gemmy appearance. The specimen diplays very well when placed on its end.
