Fluorite on Quartz

Mineral Species:  Fluorite on Calcite

Chemical Formula: CaF2

Chemical Name: Calcium Fluoride

Mineral Class: Halide

Mineral Notes: Fluorite is found in a wide range of geologic environments, ranging from inclusions in granite to replacement deposits in limestones. It is one of the most commonly collected minerals because of the beauty of its specimens.

Description: A very rich specimen consisting of several different minerals, yet forming a very attractive combination. The base is formed from a grey matrix upon which sits a thin blanket of crystalline Pyrite and Chalcopyrite. Next is a thick layer of crystalline, white Calcite, which offsets the metallic sulphides very nicely. The icing on the cake is the single, lavender Fluorite crystal resting on the Calcite. This is zoned and also very transparent, making the crystal very gemmy. However, it is the colour that makes this a very remarkable display piece.

Location: Naica, Chihuahua, Mexico.
