Fluorite

Mineral Species: Fluorite on Calcite

Chemical Formula: CaF2

Chemical Name: Calcium Fluoride

Mineral Class: Halide

Mineral Notes: Fluorite is found in a wide range of geologic environments, ranging from inclusions in granite to replacement deposits in limestones. It is one of the most commonly collected minerals because of the beauty of its specimens.

Description: A nice cluster of well-formed, colourless Fluorite. The faces and edges of the multiple cubes are very clean and show stepped growth-zones. The mineral, whilst transparent, scatters incoming light, thus giving rise to an unusual frosting of light. The refracted light changes brigtness abruptly as the crystal is moved in front of the outside light source. An interesting and attractive specimen.

Location: Hammam Zriba Mine, Tunis, Tunisia.
