Mineral Species: Manganoan Calcite
Chemical Formula: (Ca,Mn)CO3
Chemical Name: Manganese Calcium Carbonate
Mineral Class: Carbonate
Mineral Notes: Managnoan Calcite or Manganocalcite is a mineral in which a proportion of the Calcium atoms have been replaced by Manganese. The amount of Manganese varies between locations and therefore the mineral forms a solid solution series between Calcite and Rhodochrosite. The transition metal gives the mineral its attractive pink colour. As a result the mineral is highly sought after and matrix specimens are often carved into ornaments and display pieces.
Description: A very highly crystalline specimen of Manganoan Calcite showing good rhombohedral form, although most individual crystals are quite small. The colour is a pale pink due to the Manganese. Together with a very bright pearly luster this is a very attractive display specimen.
Location: Kapnikbanya, Romania.
