Mineral Species: Gypsum and Calcite
Chemical Formula: CaSO4.2H2O
Chemical Name: Hydrous Calcium Sulfate
Mineral Class: Sulfate
Mineral Notes: Gypsum is the commonest sulfate. It is a major rock forming mineral that forms massive beds, usually from precipitation out of highly saturated waters. Since it forms easily from saline water, gypsum may have many inclusions of other minerals and even trapped bubbles of air and water.
Description: Many fish-tail crystals of white Gypsum interspersed with rhombohedra of Calcite. Most crystals show co-growths where small crystals of one mineral grow out of the crystal faces of another. The minerals can be told apart by the glassy luster of Gypsum and the waxy luster of the Calcite. A very nice clean specimen.
