Olivenite

Mineral Species: Olivenite

Chemical Formula: Cu2AsO4(OH)

Chemical Name: Copper Arsenate Hydroxide

Mineral Class: Arsenate

Mineral Notes: Olivenite is a rare secondary copper mineral characterised by its dark olive green color, hence the name. It is found in extensively weathered, highly concentrated copper sulfide ores. The mineral has the same internal structure as Libethenite and Adamite. This means that they share the same symmetry and crystal shapes.

Description: A cluster of well-formed Olivenite crystals at one end of a Quartz matrix. The mineral has the deep green colour associated with it and a strong glassy luster. Overall, a very rich specimen of a Cornish mineral classic.

Location: Carharrack Mine, Gwennap, Cornwall, England.
