Aventurine

Mineral Species: Aventurine

Chemical Formula: NaCaAlSi3O8

Chemical Name: Sodium Calcium Aluminium Silicate

Mineral Class: Tectosilicate

Mineral Notes: Aventurine belongs to a family of tectosilicates silicates known as the Plagioclase series. The crystal lattice, unlike Quartz, contains spaces containing varying amounts of Sodium and Calcium. When containing crystals of mica, Aventurine becomes extremely attractive, giving off bright reflections, and for this reason is often called Sunstone.

Description: A solid block of green Aventurine. The edges are partly translucent letting through a play of green light. The surface is liberally covered by mica which is highly reflective. If desired this block could be cut and polished into jewellery. Otherwise a very nice specimen of this semi-precious gemstone.

Location: Barberton District, Mpumalanga Province, South Africa.
