Mineral Notes: Barium is easily identified by its heavy weight. Most similar minerals are much lighter. It tends to form well defined flattened crystals. Occasionally it forms large rounded mounds from precipitation of hot, barium-rich springs. Oak Stone is a a rare stalagmitic variety which has interior banding. When cut and polished this takes on a striking wood like apperarence giving rise to the name. Only known to occur at Arbour Low Moor , Derbyshire.
Description: An excellent example of Oakstone. An Old time piece collected in the late 1800s, this specimen shows part of a nodule with the classic banding and wood like appearance. Only the front and sides have been polished, which means that the back shows the original form, which is itself very crystalline and lustrous.
