Mineral Species: Vanadinite
Chemical Formula: Pb5(VO4)3Cl
Chemical Name: Lead Chlorovanadate
Mineral Class: Vanadate
Mineral Notes: Vanadinite is a secondary mineral formed by alteration of lead ore by water in the presence of vanadium. The mineral is light sensitive and so specimens should be kept in darkness. The bright orange colouration gradually darkens and dulls to shades of brown.
Description: Hundreds of small Vanadinite crystals on matrix. The colour is a shade browner than usual because of the inclusion of arsenate in addition to the vanadate anion. In fact, Vanadinite forms a series with Mimetite, the arsenate analogue. The crystals are perfectly formed and highly lustrous. A great specimen from a classic location.
Location: Old Yuma Mine, Arizona, USA.
