Mineral Species: Galena and Fluorite
Chemical Formula: PbS
Chemical Name: Lead Sulphide
Mineral Class: Sulphide
Mineral Notes: Galena is one of the most abundant and widely distributed sulfides. It is the main ore of lead and frequently contains valuable amounts of Silver and occasionally Zinc.
Description: The Galena froms the matrix of this specimen. It is gark-grey and highly crystalline. rare, octahedral crystals are very apparent, although relatively small. At the centre of the specimen sits a partial cube of lavender-cloured Fluorite. The crystal is very transparent and gemmy. However this makes the crystal quite hard to see and very difficult to photograph. Nevertheless this is a superb combination.
Location: Heights Quarry, Weardale, Co Durham, England.
