Galena on Fluorite

Mineral Species: Galena and Fluorite

Chemical Formula: PbS

Chemical Name: Lead Sulphide

Mineral Class: Sulphide

Mineral NotesGalena is one of the most abundant and widely distributed sulfides. It is the main ore of lead and frequently contains valuable amounts of Silver and occasionally Zinc.

Description: The Galena froms the matrix of this specimen. It is gark-grey and highly crystalline. rare, octahedral crystals are very apparent, although relatively small. At the centre of the specimen sits a partial cube of lavender-cloured Fluorite. The crystal is very transparent and gemmy. However this makes the crystal quite hard to see and very difficult to photograph. Nevertheless this is a superb combination.

Location: Heights Quarry, Weardale, Co Durham, England.
