Mineral Species: Fluorite and Calcite
Chemical Formula: CaF2
Chemical Name: Calcium Fluoride
Mineral Class: Halide
Mineral Notes: Fluorite is found in a wide range of geologic environments, ranging from inclusions in granite to replacement deposits in limestones. It is one of the most commonly collected minerals because of the beauty of its specimens.
Description: Several twinned cubic crystals of Fluorite on matrix. The mineral is unusually clear and almost of optical quality. The edges and terminations are sharp and undamaged. Around the base of the Fluorite cluster are numerous columnar crystals of cream-coloured Calcite. These have excellent pyramidal terminations. Many of the crystals are also barrel-shaped, narrowing at both ends. The combiantion is mineralogically very interesting and aesthetically attractive.
Location: Heights Quarry, Weardale, Co Durham, England.
