Mineral Species: Wavellite
Chemical Formula: Al3(PO4)2(OH,F)3.5(H2O)
Chemical Name: Hydrated Aluminium Phosphate Hydroxide
Mineral Class: Phosphate
Mineral Notes: Wavellite is a mineral that demonstrates the classic botryoidal crystal habit. It produces a unique effect when the globules are imbedded in rock and then fractured. The result is a radial cluster which reflects light to produce a sparkling pinwheel effect.
Description: A pair of overlapping rosettes of Wavellite on Matrix. Individual radiating crystals are easily seen. Each pinwheel contains a colour gradation, being lightest at the centre and becoming a rich olive-green at the periphery. There are also spherical colour bands within each cluster. The strong pearly luster compliments the showiness of the specimen.
Location: Mauldin Mountain Quarry, Montgomery, Arkansas, USA.
