Mineral Species: Quartz var. Herkimer Diamond
Chemical Formula: SiO2
Chemical Name: Silicon Dioxide
Mineral Class: Tectosilicate
Mineral Notes: Herkimer Quartz is a highly crystalline variety of Quartz with a particulalry high refractive index. This gives specimens a particular brilliance which has been likened to diamonds. For this reason the specimens are often called "Herkimer Diamonds". The word Herkimer refers to the location where these were first found and described, Herkimer County, New York, USA.
Description: An unusally large and gemmy crystal of Herkimer Quartz. The strong refractive index makes the comparison with diamond easy to see. The crystal has an overall bipyramidal form with a narrow band surrounding the middle. The top termination is perfectly formed whilst the bottom one shows the original point of attachment to matrix. A great display specimen.
Location: Fonde, Herkimer County, New York, USA (Type Location).
